OAK HILL CoE PRIMARY SCHOOL We have welcomed families to our open morning for tours to experience what makes our school such a wonderful place. Our second open morning is on Wednesday, 3rd December. We are very happy to show families around the school by prior arrangement if they are not able to attend the open events. Our newly introduced Eco committee (a pupil-organised and led enrichment club) have discussed why this club was so important and the impact they can have. They’ve decided that the first project will be redesigning the garden area by Elm class. We are really looking forward to seeing this evolve. Redwood Class took a residential trip to North Devon and loved completing new challenges. Activities included an all-day walk along the coast, abseiling down a cliff and climbing back up, kayaking, canoeing, playing games, learning fencing and archery (with real bows and arrows), and the Year 6s even went surfing! It was an incredible week with lots of laughs and smiles. Year 4 children travelled to Viney Hill Christian Centre in the Forest of Dean. Over three days, the children took part in adventurous activities that required perseverance, courage and resilience. They experienced low ropes, tunnelling, climbing, navigation, team challenges, archery, crate stacking and bushcraft, as well as lots of time spent with their new friends. Evenings included a torch-lit forest walk and a campfire with sweet treats and songs. Elm class had a wonderful trip to Tewkesbury Museum to learn all about Antarctic explorer, Raymond Priestly. They toured the Abbey and popped into the Christmas shop and the chocolate cafe! The children impressed with their questions at the Museum and the Abbey. Rowan class wrapped up warm and armed with nothing but a map, they headed out to find the building site for the new houses! After using impressive map-reading skills, they were thrilled to see some machinery at work on the building site. We're now in performance rehearsals for the Nativity and looking forward to the Carol Service - a busy month ahead! 3. CLUBS & SOCIETIESALDERTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club / Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore Alderton Gardening Club met on 13 November for its penultimate talk of 2025. The evening began with a last-minute change of programme when the scheduled speaker, tool-sharpening specialist Will Scott, had to withdraw on the morning of the event. Fortunately, long-time friend of the club and Ashton-under-Hill entomologist Roger Umpleby kindly stepped in, delivering a beautifully illustrated talk on the butterflies and day-flying moths of Bredon Hill. Roger introduced the audience of 44 to the many species found in our area, describing their habitats, preferred plants, and behavioural quirks. His striking photographs—captured with great patience and skill—highlighted the delicate markings and colours of these insects. With decades of professional experience working for government and private bodies, as well as a lifelong passion for gardening, Roger brought deep knowledge and enthusiasm to the subject. A former chairman of the Beckford Gardening Club, he has supported Alderton Gardening Club since its founding in 2018, and this was his fourth visit. After speaking for just over an hour, he answered questions ranging from camera equipment to the best plants for attracting butterflies. Following a warm round of applause, Chairman Tom Cullimore gave his monthly gardening tips and club updates. Sarah Bradley received this month’s garden voucher for her photo taken at Kew Gardens, while the prestigious RHS Banksian Medal was awarded to Mark Watts-Jones for his exceptional contribution to community life. Tulip bulbs and the new Alderton Gardening Club mugs were available for purchase, with mugs priced at £6 (orders via [email protected]). An eight-prize raffle, drawn by Roger, rounded off the evening. Looking ahead, the club’s Christmas members-only event will take place on Thursday 11 December, featuring a talk by Mary Fenton, festive refreshments, next year’s programme reveal, and free holly and mistletoe—a thank-you to members for their continued support. 4. GREAT WASHBOURNE NEWSThank you to all who have supported the church over the last month by joining us for afternoon tea served in the church in aid of MacMillan Cancer and St Mary’s church it was a most enjoyable afternoon, raising £340; also to those who came to the annual Family Quiz raising a total of £875 in aid of the church fund. The paper flower arrangements remain on display in the church, do pop in and have a look, they are very clever! CAROL SINGING, MONDAY 22ND DECEMBER AT 6.30PM We hope to be able to welcome you to the village carol singing evening which will be held in the church on Monday 22nd December at 6.30pm. 5. EVENTSALDERTON MARRIED V SINGLES CHARITY FOOTBALL SUN DEC 28TH 2025 – ALDERTON PLAYING FIELD, KICK OFF 13:00 Once again, the brave, big-hearted Married people of Alderton will take to the field of play against the Single people of Alderton. The quality of the football isn’t great, but the fundraising is – over the years, the matches have raised over £25,000 for local and national charities. This year, we’re fundraising for the Midlands Air Ambulance, which plays a vital role in responding to emergencies across Gloucestershire. In October 2025 alone, they were deployed 240 times, including a couple of incidents here in Alderton. Our fantastic prize draw is for four Manchester United v Aston Villa tickets, plus parking at Old Trafford, on Saturday 14th March 2026, kick off 3pm. Prize draw tickets are £10 each. They’ll be on sale from early December. The match kicks off at 1pm, with refreshments available, and festivities to follow in the Gardeners Arms. Amazing football skills aren’t required, and both male and female players over 16 are welcome. If you’d like to play, let Rupert know at [email protected].
