MINUTES FROM PARISH COUNCIL MEETINGS
The latest minutes can be found at: https://www.aldertonparishcouncil.org.uk/meetings-2025

FLOOD PREVENTION
Flood-prevention work has mitigated the impact of recent heavy, continuous rain. A couple of additional culvert grills will be inserted to help prevent debris accumulation on water courses. Sand and sandbags are also available at the allotments.

PLANNING UPDATES
Proposed Development – Land south of Beckford Road [now 32 houses] 24/00393/OUT
No further news. Issues have been registered with Tewkesbury Planning by local residents and supported by a further submission from the Parish Council. Highways have yet to make a full response.

Proposed Development – Land Behind 52-74 Willow Bank Road [ 48 houses] 2400801/FUL
Following representation, the Parish Council have received assurances from Owl Homes that the bollards are only temporary and on a timer. Gloucestershire County Council have also confirmed that they will insist the bollards are
removed. Planning enforcement issues remain.

WAR MEMORIAL
A local resident has identified two men with Alderton connections not listed on the War Memorial. These are AV Grimmett and J James. There is one AV Grimmett listed but there were in fact two brothers with the same initials. The Tewkesbury Conservation Officer is supportive of making two additions to the Memorial.

ALLOTMENTS
More trees have been planted on the western boundary.

ROAD SAFETY
The Parish Council is reconsidering the installation of two speed indicator devices in the village and is in discussion with Highways. More news in the new financial year.

We would like to extend our sincerest gratitude to the Alderton community for the incredibly warm welcome we have received since opening our doors. Transitioning a beloved local landmark is no small feat, and your support, curiosity, and kindness have made us feel right at home from day one.

At The Gurkhas at the Gardeners Arms, we are proud to blend the traditional charm of a classic English pub with the rich, authentic flavours of Nepalese cuisine.

Well-behaved dogs on leads, big and small are very welcome to join us for this special morning. Homemade doggie treats will be available to buy as well as the usual tea, coffee and cakes. Takeaways are also available.

ST MARGARET’S CHURCH

SATURDAY APRIL 11TH 10AM - TIDYING UP THE CHURCHYARD
We will be doing this on Saturday April 11th at 10am. If the weather is poor (based on the rain we've had!) the following Saturday, April 18th. A lot of visitors comment on what an attractive Churchyard we have and it is always great to have people to come and help keep it looking that way, so do join us to help. We are pleased to have a conservation area and a variety of spring flowers so it's good to keep the area looking good.

OAK HILL CoE PRIMARY SCHOOL
https://www.oakhill.gloucs.sch.uk/

We've had a busy first Spring tem with events to enrich the children's learning including a visit to a Gloucester Mosque and Gloucester Cathedral, a swimming gala and a Knex challenge day. We are now rushing on with the next term - plans for World Book Day, our own celebration day and the third Easter Fair are all underway.

We are again reaching out for support from our local community connections for support for any donations for raffle prizes and financial support for our latest venture - turning the muddy play area into an all weather surface facility and are raising funds to help reach our huge goal of £16,000.00. Please let us know if you have any ideas to help us reach this target.
OAK HILL PRIMARY SCHOOL EASTER FAIR VILLAGE HALL, FRIDAY 27TH MARCH, 2PM TO 4PM
Join us for a fun afternoon with activities for all the family, including Easter games, Easter crafts, raffle, tombola, stalls, lots of yummy cakes and much more!

The event is designed to bring our local community together while also raising funds to support enrichment opportunities for the children at our small rural school.
Thanks to previous events we've been able to:
  • Buy diversity books to broaden children’s understanding of the world
  • Support Sports Week, including specialist training and a circus skills experience
  • Install a school cooker so pupils can develop cooking and baking skills

This year we are raising funds towards our £16,000 goal to transform our muddy play area into an all-weather outdoor space, allowing children to play and learn outside throughout the year.

As a small school, support from our community is incredibly important. If any local businesses or residents would be willing to donate a prize for our raffle, we would be extremely grateful. All donations will be recognised on our event donations board and in the school newsletter after the event.
Thank you for supporting Oak Hill School and helping our pupils learn, grow and flourish.

ALDERTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS
www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club / Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore

The Alderton Gardening Club enjoyed a triumphant return in February after January’s meeting was cancelled due to poor weather. Despite another wet day, more than 70 members and guests gathered at Alderton Village Hall on Thursday 12th February, creating a warm and enthusiastic atmosphere.

The evening’s distinguished speaker was Michael Marriott, former Head Rosarian at David Austin Roses for 35 years. Travelling from Shropshire, Michael delivered a comprehensive 90-minute talk titled “It’s Easy to Grow Beautiful Roses.” Now retired, he remains highly active, sharing his expertise with gardening clubs and advising prestigious clients. During his career, he has advised His Majesty King Charles at Highgrove and designed rose gardens both internationally and across the UK, including at Windsor Castle, Kew Gardens and The Queen Mary’s Garden in Regent’s Park.

Introduced by Chairman Tom Cullimore, Michael covered every aspect of successful rose growing. He emphasised choosing healthy, reliable varieties and demonstrated how roses can be beautifully combined with perennials, biennials and annuals. Key topics included positioning and aspect, soil preparation, fertilisers, pruning, deadheading, mulching, planting, watering, and managing pests and diseases. Drawing on photographs from gardens he had visited or designed, he discussed cultivars, growth habits, fragrance and decorative hips.

Michael recommends soil testing before applying fertiliser and favours wood chip mulches. He advocates a straightforward approach to pruning—cut back well at the correct time without overcomplicating the process—and prefers taking cuttings while plants are actively growing, reporting greater success than with traditional dormant hardwood cuttings.

After a lively question session and warm applause, club notices followed. Members were thanked for their support, including Gotherington Nurseries for compost supplies. A May plant sale and the AGM were announced. Mary Anne Jones won the £10 gardening voucher for her photograph of an amaryllis in bloom. The popular raffle was drawn by Michael.

Membership is thriving, with 94 members already signed up for 2026—seven more than last year at this time. Tickets for Sue Kent’s October 8th talk are selling well. The club next welcomes Mike Dron, Head Gardener at The Lords of the Manor, on March 12th for “Gardening Naturally.”

Doors open at 6.45p.m at Alderton Village Hall for a 7.30 pm start. Free refreshments and a raffle, and some jobs and tips for the month if time permits. Members £3 Non Members £6
