CLUBS & SOCIETIESALDERTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club / Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore The Alderton Gardening Club enjoyed a triumphant return in February after January’s meeting was cancelled due to poor weather. Despite another wet day, more than 70 members and guests gathered at Alderton Village Hall on Thursday 12th February, creating a warm and enthusiastic atmosphere. The evening’s distinguished speaker was Michael Marriott, former Head Rosarian at David Austin Roses for 35 years. Travelling from Shropshire, Michael delivered a comprehensive 90-minute talk titled “It’s Easy to Grow Beautiful Roses.” Now retired, he remains highly active, sharing his expertise with gardening clubs and advising prestigious clients. During his career, he has advised His Majesty King Charles at Highgrove and designed rose gardens both internationally and across the UK, including at Windsor Castle, Kew Gardens and The Queen Mary’s Garden in Regent’s Park. Introduced by Chairman Tom Cullimore, Michael covered every aspect of successful rose growing. He emphasised choosing healthy, reliable varieties and demonstrated how roses can be beautifully combined with perennials, biennials and annuals. Key topics included positioning and aspect, soil preparation, fertilisers, pruning, deadheading, mulching, planting, watering, and managing pests and diseases. Drawing on photographs from gardens he had visited or designed, he discussed cultivars, growth habits, fragrance and decorative hips. Michael recommends soil testing before applying fertiliser and favours wood chip mulches. He advocates a straightforward approach to pruning—cut back well at the correct time without overcomplicating the process—and prefers taking cuttings while plants are actively growing, reporting greater success than with traditional dormant hardwood cuttings. After a lively question session and warm applause, club notices followed. Members were thanked for their support, including Gotherington Nurseries for compost supplies. A May plant sale and the AGM were announced. Mary Anne Jones won the £10 gardening voucher for her photograph of an amaryllis in bloom. The popular raffle was drawn by Michael. Membership is thriving, with 94 members already signed up for 2026—seven more than last year at this time. Tickets for Sue Kent’s October 8th talk are selling well. The club next welcomes Mike Dron, Head Gardener at The Lords of the Manor, on March 12th for “Gardening Naturally.” Doors open at 6.45p.m at Alderton Village Hall for a 7.30 pm start. Free refreshments and a raffle, and some jobs and tips for the month if time permits. Members £3 Non Members £6 4.
