2. ALDERTON BUSINESSES & SERVICES

THE GURKHAS AT GARDENERS ARMS
www.thegurkhasatgardenersarms.co.uk / 01242 620257 / [email protected]

The team at The Gurkhas at Gardeners Arms thank local residents for the warm welcome and strong support they have received since opening in the village. The restaurant has quickly become a popular addition to the local community, with diners enjoying its traditional Nepalese dishes, relaxed atmosphere and friendly hospitality. The menu features a range of authentic curries, freshly prepared momos and a variety of vegetarian and vegan options, all inspired by classic Nepalese recipes.

We’ve been delighted by the response from villagers and visitors alike, and are grateful for the encouragement shown during their first few months in Alderton. “We’ve been made to feel incredibly welcome,” said the restaurant manager. “It’s been wonderful to see so many people coming through the doors to try the food, spend time with friends and support us as a new local business.”

Alongside its food offering, the restaurant also hopes to establish itself as a welcoming social spot where people can meet for a drink, whether that’s a refreshing lager, ale or something a little different.

ST MARGARET’S CHURCH

CHURCH HEATING
We are delighted to say that the electrical heating system has now been installed in the Church. We have been very impressed with the gas engineers and the team of electricians who kept to their time scales, kept us informed and left the Church tidy. We would like to thank everyone in our great village community who so generously contributed towards the heating system which is hugely appreciated.

We would also like to thank the Parish Council, Enovert Community Trust, Benefact Trust, C of E Net Zero Hardship Fund and the Diocese of Gloucester Net Zero Hardship Fund for giving us grants towards the costs. We have tested the heaters and all is working well so we are set up for the autumn and winter. We are pleased to say that Church is now open again in daylight hours.

SUMMER FAIR

Saturday July 18th is the date for the Summer Fair.

MAGICAL HOUSE PROTECTION, A HISTORY TALK, SAT JUNE 13th, 6.30PM
Join local historian Brian Hoggard for a fascinating talk on medieval Marian marks and other protective symbols found in historic buildings. Brian is a Heritage & Conservation Officer at Tewkesbury Abbey and has studied the archaeology of counter-witchcraft for nearly 30 years.
Picture
Brian brings his expertise to Alderton for a fascinating talk on counter witchcraft - including why were shoes and dead animals concealed in walls? What’s the significance of marks scratched onto the surface of historical and domestic buildings? Or burn marks on fireplaces?

Brian will take us through the significance of these protection marks and objects in Alderton Village Hall and then we’ll take a minute’s stroll to St Margaret’s Church where Brian will show some of the visible and more well-hidden protection and magical marks found in the Church.

Brian regularly lectures on apotropaic marks, has written several books, newspaper articles, and podcasts, and appeared on national TV and radio.

There will be a cash bar there too! Tickets are limited and cost just £10.  Available from Sarah Hughes ([email protected])

ALDERTON GARDENING CLUB NEWS
www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club / Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore

At the April meeting of Alderton Gardening Club we celebrated the eighth anniversary of the club. As everyone enjoyed celebratory cakes provided by Julia, who unfortunately was unable to join us, and a drop of 'fizzy', chairman Tom gave a brief account of the club's beginnings up till today.

Tom then did his 'warm up' act as we awaited our speaker, who was delayed by unfortunately finding her way to Alderton in Wiltshire! 'Tom's tips' for the busy month of April was well received. Jean Vernon gave a talk on 'The Secret Lives of Garden Bees'. Jean's talk was well-received, and she was impressed with her reception from everyone.

The next meeting is on Thursday 14th May: The Merry Month of May - Katherine Kear

Doors open from 6.45pm for a 7.30pm start in Alderton Village Hall.

6. OTHER NEWS

FREEMAN HOMES PARTNERS W/ LOCAL CHILDREN’S AUTHOR
Freeman Homes has teamed up with local children’s author and illustrator Helene Gardiner to inspire the next generation to protect one of the UK’s most-loved native mammals: the hedgehog. To mark Hedgehog Awareness Week, the regional housebuilder is hosting a series of interactive school readings of Helene Gardiner’s Hedgehog and the Fence at Oak Hill C of E Primary School in Alderton and Newnham St Peter’s C of E Primary School in Newnham-on-Severn.

At both schools, pupils in Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 will welcome Helene Gardiner, where she will read from her much-loved book, share insights into hedgehog behaviour and habitats, and lead an engaging discussion about how families and communities can help hedgehogs thrive.

Each child taking part will receive a signed copy of the book, a bookmark, and a hedgehog care pack filled with practical advice on how to make gardens and shared outdoor spaces more wildlife-friendly, ensuring the learning continues well beyond the classroom.

The initiative forms part of Freeman Homes’ wider commitment to connecting communities with nature, a core pillar of its sustainability framework and long-term Net Zero 2045 journey. At its Daylestone Park development in Alderton alone, Freeman Homes has integrated extensive wildlife-friendly features including hedgehog highways, specialist bird and bat boxes, wetlands, and thousands of new trees and plants.

Hedgehog Awareness Week is run by the British Hedgehog Preservation Society, which has provided the educational leaflets and posters for families.
DEFIBRILLATORS
There are two defibrillators in the village. To use both, take your mobile phone as you need to call 999 to get the release code.
