Alderton Village Newsletter - December 2024Note from Editor: As we approach the festive period I am very aware of the people we have lost this year in the village both young and old. I hope nearly everyone has sat on the benches at the foot of the dungeon that commemorate both Ross and William, and taken in the view of our amazing village. Malcolm and Geoffrey were true lifelong villagers who gave their all for our community. For their families, and those of John and other villagers who are not here this Christmas, our thoughts are with you. Thanks to everyone who attended as the power fault occurred at 6.45 p.m just before our doors opened! Due to our speaker falling ill the rescheduled meeting was cancelled. The December meeting is a member's only Christmas Social evening and Quiz with Glyn Jones 7pm for a 7.30p.m start in Alderton Village Hall. OAK HILL SCHOOL https://www.oakhill.gloucs.sch.uk/ We are on the lookout for some new local advisors (used to be called Governors) to join our school team at Oak Hill C of E Primary School. What do local advisors do? Local advisors are welcomed as valued members of the team and play a vital role in ensuring the local advisory board is aware of the views of parents and the local community. There will be five local advisor meetings per academic year. Local advisors are expected to read all material in advance of a meeting and to have given thought to the issues raised. Further, local advisors usually visit the school once or twice a year to see the school development plan in action. A report of the visit is made to the Local Advisory Board. Alongside all this, it is useful to maintain a current interest in education both locally and nationally. Please contact Stephen Dean, CEO Primary QuEST at [email protected] if you are interested. ST MARGARET’S CHURCH We will soon be saying farewell to 2024. We wish to extend enormous thanks to everyone who has helped or volunteered and supported St Margaret’s during the year. Thanks to all the church cleaners, flower arrangers, churchyard volunteers, food providers at our social events and to everyone who attended these events. It has all helped to keep our church functioning and we thank you all. As a church we send you our love through our monthly Newsletter. With much to pray for, may I take this opportunity to wish you all a Holy Advent, where you experience a time of ‘spiritual alertness’ to Jesus; a wonderfully blessed Christmas and, taking the babe of Bethlehem in your arms this Christmas let him take you by the hand into the New Year in love. I hope new year brings health and joy for all. Every year at this time I receive lots of cards with your kind messages which I love and hold dear. However, this year I would like to ask you to be kind enough to pay the value of the money to a charity. I hope to see you in PERSON to exchange pleasantries. This year the Christmas is in the middle of the week. As I am traveling to be with my family, I am planning to close the shop for a week (from 23th/Dec. to Monday 30th/Dec.) I am sorry for any inconvenience it may cause. Many of shop’s regular customers know by now that unfortunately due to health problems during last couple of years, (technically called getting old) I have been slowing down a bit and I am planning for my retirement. This means putting the business for sale, which may take a bit of time as selling a Post Office is not easy. Sadly, since Covid time the shop has lost lots of its customers and support. It seems that everyone is happy to have a village shop as far as others support it. Remember, the shop without proper income is harder to sell. If the shop does not sell as a business, I may have close it and sell it as empty property which means no shop and no post office. Any suggestions? Regrettably due to slow trade, I have to reduce some of products to minimum orders, therefore it is advisable to order your required perishable goods such as milk, cream, ham etc., to avoid disappointment and also helps me to reduce the food-waste. Please continue to support your local shop. Thank you, Yari 3. CLUBS/CLASSESALDERTON BELLES (ALDERTON HAND BELL RINGERS ASSOCIATION) Vicky Hardwick and Julie Tomlinson The hand bells belong to the village of Alderton, and a number of years ago the Association was formed to care for the bells and keep them available for future generations. The current team of 14 ringers meets fortnightly to practise and plays at village events such as the Christmas Coffee morning and the Church Summer Fair. Originally there were eight bells, but many local people have made donations, so we now have a two-octave set, which enables us to be more creative with the music we play. Of the twenty six bells, twnety are inscribed with dedications to much loved villagers. In order to preserve the bells in the best condition, every few years they must be re-tunedand refurbished. As the cost of this maintenance is £100-£150 per bell, any donations or money raised by performing is saved to meet the costs. We are planning to have the bells re-tuned and refurbished in the New Year and would be grateful for any donations (however large or small) villagers could make towards the cost. If you are able to make a donation, please either make an online transfer (bank details below) or as cash/cheque in a clearly marked envelope to Kaye Hunt, 8 Willowbank Road, Alderton. This is also an opportunity to have the remaining 6 bells inscribed (as they need to be re-tuned after engraving). If you would like to dedicate a bell to a person and would be willing to fund the engraving and make a donation, please contact us on the email below. We are really looking forward to our next performance and hope to see many of you there: CHRISTMAS COFFEE MORNING IN THE VILLAGE HALL ON SATURDAY 21ST DECEMBER, 10AM-12PM Cheques payable to: The Alderton Handbell Ringers Association Sort Code: 30-91-87 Account Number: 02255240 Email: [email protected] and hope to see many of you there. 4. ALDERTON AUTHOR – ALI ARMISHAW www.aliarmishaw.co.uk I’m thrilled to let you know that my first book, Women at Their Emotional Limit: A Workbook for Managing Overwhelm and Achieving Wellbeing, will be available on Amazon from 3rd December 2024! This book is really close to my heart. It’s for women who feel like life is just too much – whether that’s juggling work, family, or everything in between. I’ve been there myself, and through my own experience of recovering from burnout (and years of coaching other women), I’ve created a practical, supportive guide to help regain clarity, balance, and confidence. The workbook is packed with tools, self-assessments, and exercises, along with real-life examples to make it relatable and easy to use. My hope is that it gives women the tools and encouragement to take back control and feel good again. If this sounds like something you or someone you know would find helpful, you can find out more and order a copy at www.aliarmishaw.co.uk. Thank you so much for your support! Ali Armishaw 5.
