This event was long in the planning, selling out all tickets. Christine had requested a chair as she recently had a fall so we put the stage up to afford her an elevated position. Tom did his customary welcome and introduction, before handing over to Christine for her talk… "The life and times of a gardener". What a story it was as well! A tale of a young girl's initial struggle to get started in horticulture. She was soon growing vegetables and plants and selling them. She left school at 13 to work in the local council's parks and gardens department. She suffered great bigotry, verbal abuse and overall humiliation from her fellow male colleagues. She was given the job of digging graves, but Christine was made of stern stuff and enjoyed studying the soils and their various profiles, while digging. She then studied at Lancashire College of Agriculture. More practical experience followed with work at two experimental horticultural stations in Warwickshire and Yorkshire. Following this a post became available at The Royal Botanic gardens at Kew, eventually working on the Millenium seed bank! A move to Llangollen in North Wales followed where she worked as a Technical Advisor. A move to the Rhondda Valley saw her set up a training Workshop for young offenders as part of the manpower services commission. Christine rehabilitated these young men, and "grew a crop of nurtured people”. As she said: "if you can grow plants, then you can grow people." She then returned to college at Pershore. With more qualifications under her belt Christine found a post at Writtle College near Chelmsford, before becoming a Lecturer for a good number of years at Capel Manor in Enfield. A big change followed with Christine deciding to go freelance, working as a plantswoman, horticulturalist and lecturer. Television then beckoned, and she told us of her initial reluctance to go into this. Christine is still a regular panellist on Radio 4's Gardeners Question Time. A 12-prize raffle followed and then Tom’s vote of thanks and applause. Next month: ‘Happy Plants, Happy Minds’. It will be great to see you. ST MARGARET’S CHURCH GIFT DAY Just a word about the purpose of Gift Day. The church is the oldest listed building in the village and whilst obviously used for Sunday services, it is also the focus for christenings, weddings and burials. The Church and Churchyard are places for quiet reflection and we all want to see our church continue as a living organisation. The church is blessed by having many volunteers but inevitably there are running and maintenance expenses. This year we are undertaking some repairs following the 5 yearly review of the state of the building and grounds. Income is all locally generated and mainly comes from service collections and fundraising events but the church operates on a fairly tight budget and we welcome the generosity of villagers on an annual basis to donate much-needed additional support. Please support us if you can. There are envelopes inside the church newsletter for St Margaret’s Annual Gift Day. These can be handed in outside Church on Saturday 27th July (12 – 4pm) or anytime, any day in the wall safe just inside the Church or put in a box which will be left in the shop after July 15th.
