ALDERTON ACORNS www.aldertonacorns.org.uk.co.uk Can You Help Keep Alderton Acorns Thriving? Alderton Acorns Preschool is a much-loved part of our village, providing a warm, nurturing environment where local children can learn and grow. As a charity-run Preschool, we rely on a dedicated volunteer committee to help with fundraising and decision-making—and now, we need your support! This August, two of our valued committee members are stepping down, and we urgently need to fill their places. Without a full committee, our Constitution prevents us from running the Preschool. Could you spare three to four hours a month? Our monthly meetings take just a couple of hours, but being part of the team does mean getting involved beyond the meetings. Whether it’s helping to plan fundraising events or supporting small tasks in between, we all play a part in making sure the Preschool thrives. The time commitment varies depending on what’s happening, but we work together to share the load and the rewards of seeing the Preschool flourish make it all worthwhile! The key leadership roles (Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary) are already covered, so we’re looking for two friendly, enthusiastic people to join our team. No special skills are needed. Being part of the committee is a great way to meet people, make a real difference in the community, and support our fantastic Preschool team, led by our wonderful new manager, Katie Chandler. Whether you have experience in events, a passion for community projects, or just want to lend a hand, we’d love to welcome your energy and ideas. If you’re curious or want to know more, please get in touch with myself, Katie or any of the *committee members via email or WhatsApp. We’d love to hear from you! Let’s work together to keep Alderton Acorns growing for the next generation. Thank you! Ali Armishaw Chair ([email protected]) *Andy & Grace Robertson Cathie and Andy Bridges Gaynor Kingston ST MARGARET’S CHURCH MUSIC TO DELIGHT CONCERT Thank you to everyone who came to the Concert “Music to Delight” – it was great to see the Church filled with you all and you said how much you enjoy their voices and their range of songs. Thank you to everyone who made food for the evening. The profit was shared between St Margaret’s Church, Alderton and St Mary’s Great Washbourne and each made £603 – Alderton’s money will be put towards a new heating system. Thank you also to the singers and the pianist for giving us such excellent entertainment. CHURCHYARD CLEARANCE, SATURDAY APRIL 5TH STARTING AT 11AM We’re starting at 11am to enable you to go to the Plant Fair and Coffee morning at 10am first! We always smarten up the Churchyard before Easter and we would really appreciate any help from people. Visitors often say what a lovely churchyard it is so do come along with any gardening tools and hopefully it will be a warm day – and we will supply you with another coffee and biscuits! EASTER FLOWERS As it always is, the Church will be decorated for Easter Sunday so do come in and have a look at them – they last for quite a while in the building and the Church is open every day. VE DAY 80th AFTERNOON TEA, MONDAY 5TH MAY, 3PM TO 5PM VILLAGE HALL Victory in Europe (VE) Day 2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. While VE Day itself is May 8th, to support this year’s momentous anniversary, the Bank Holiday Monday 5th May has been officially dedicated to community celebrations! Therefore on Monday 5th May we will be holding an afternoon tea for £5 per person to include a plate of sandwiches, cakes and tea in Alderton Village Hall between 3pm and 5pm. Come and join us to celebrate our Second World War veterans, to both remember their efforts and to honour the freedom that VE Day represents. It will be great to see you. All proceeds will be shared between The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund and St Margaret’s Church for a new heating system. 3. CLUBS & SOCIETIESGARDENING CLUB NEWS www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore For the March 2025 meeting of Alderton Gardening Club, we welcomed renowned garden photographer and speaker Adrian James from Offenham for his talk, Folklore and More. Before the meeting, Adrian shared his experience of giving talks to various gardening clubs. He was impressed by the thriving state of our club and the large turnout of over 60 members despite the cold weather. Chairman Tom opened the evening with a welcome, gardening tips, and club updates before introducing Adrian. The talk covered folklore, traditions, and sayings related to snowdrops, wassailing, Morris dancing, brambles, hawthorns, and the Green Man. Adrian’s engaging and humorous storytelling, combined with his exceptional photography, made for an entertaining and informative session. His presentation was well-received, and he answered questions about his talk and his own garden, Langdale, which has been featured in Gardeners' World magazine and regularly opens under the National Garden Scheme (NGS). After a round of applause, Tom provided further club updates. Highlights included news from the recent AGM, an update on the compost order, the upcoming coffee morning and plant sale, and a committee change. Sarah Hughes is stepping down after years of dedicated service, and Jono Lewis is stepping in, taking over the raffle duties from his wife, Beverly, who will now handle speaker bookings alongside Nicki and Sheila, who will coordinate outings. Jono then took the stage for his first raffle as the club’s first male raffle coordinator, assisted by Adrian, who drew the nine prize-winning tickets. The evening concluded with a vote of thanks and more applause. It was encouraging to see new faces, with two new members joining on the night. Looking ahead, 68 tickets have been sold for the special event featuring Pippa Greenwood on June 12th, with 52 tickets still available. Members can secure tickets for £10, and non-members for £15. A reminder was given for the coffee morning and plant sale on April 5th at Alderton Village Hall from 10 a.m. to 12 noon. Three nurseries will be selling a wide variety of plants, alongside a table from the Alderton Allotment Association offering vegetable plants and seedlings. There will also be a raffle and refreshments. Next month’s meeting on Thursday April 10th will feature Pauline Wickens speaking on Bach Flower remedies. This meeting will mark the club’s 7th anniversary, though the celebratory cake and drinks will be served in May upon our secretary Julia Alvis’s return. Members £3, non-members £6—everyone is welcome! 7pm for a 730pm start. ALDERTON WANDERERS CRICKET CLUB 12 years and still going….…….unlike our bodies the day after playing…… Quick reminder that Alderton has a cricket team. No pitch but we do have a team. Our matches are on Wednesday evenings against most of the other local clubs…..who do have a pitch… This season starts with the opening match of a Tri-Series against our old rivals Childswickham with whom we now compete for the Priors Tipple Cup. We then have games nearly every Wednesday through to mid-August, as well as the annual weekend inter-club game and not one but 2 matches against our friends over the hill in Dumbleton, including the Gordon Hayden Shield match. Chuck in a few socials (Golf day, cricket festival trip) and we have a pretty full summer. Here are our games through to the end of May:

ANNOUNCEMENTSNOTICE FROM FRAMPTON FARM Yes, it’s that time of year again, when we make our annual plea to all the dog owners in the area to please keep your dogs on a lead when walking through (or near) fields where there are ewes and lambs. Sadly, we have already had one incident of an out of control dog, with no owner in sight. On this occasion the dog was contained in one of the arable fields, so luckily did not get in with the sheep. However well you think you know your dog and believe it to be perfectly behaved, most of them love a good game, so if they see sheep running, they want to join in. Fun for the dog, terror for the ewes and lambs! As we say every year, we appreciate it is a small minority of irresponsible dog owners. And again, please don’t put us in a horrible position where we would have to destroy a dog to stop it killing and injuring farm animals. Many thanks for your co-operation. Gareth and Mel Watkins, Frampton Farm HIGHWAY CODE AND HORSES Please can you remind villagers to take care when driving past horses. I have just started riding my horse again and some people still drive passed too fast and close. I am lucky that my horse is so good but even she can jump sideways. "Highway Code - Rule 215 - Horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles. Be particularly careful of horse riders and horse-drawn vehicles especially when approaching, overtaking, passing or moving away. Always pass wide and slowly. When you see a horse on a road, you should slow down to a maximum of 10 mph. Be patient, do not sound your horn or rev your engine. When safe to do so, pass wide and slow, allowing at least 2 metres of space." Thanks!
