At least we didn't have to worry about the rain! There was a lovely atmosphere in the Churchyard around all the stalls and up in the Village hall where cakes and tea were enjoyed. We are very grateful to everyone who ran a stall and the work that they put into them. The stalls and teas made a brilliant total of £1,451.00, so thank you. Another big thank you to people who have given money in gift envelopes. Both these monies will be put towards the new church heating system which will be carbon-free. If people would still like to donate money, there will be envelopes inside the Church in the wire basket where the newsletters are placed and also in a box in the village shop. PET SERVICE We had a great attendance at this relaxed family service. Dogs, a rabbit, two guinea pigs, a chicken and a tortoise. At the wedding we just had in Alderton, we even had a Shetland pony carrying the paper confetti 3. CLUBS & SOCIETIESGARDENING CLUB NEWS Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore For July’s meeting, we welcomed stand-in speaker Philip Aubury, former Director of the Birmingham Botanic Gardens. His topic, “Keeping Them in Shape,” provided a thorough exploration of pruning — covering its purpose, timing, tool selection (with a hands-on display), pruning techniques, and approaches for various plant types including fruit trees, shrubs, evergreens, and roses. Philip’s PowerPoint presentation was complemented by live demonstrations using plant materials and tools, making for a highly informative session. The last club talk on pruning was back in 2019, so this session served as a valuable and timely refresher. The audience was highly engaged, with numerous questions answered expertly by Philip. Chairman Tom shared club news, including details of the upcoming Garden Party in Beckford on 27th July (2–5 p.m.) featuring three garden visits and cream tea for £3. Tickets are available via [email protected]. Tom also offered gardening tips for July. Philip then drew the 11-prize raffle, and a vote of thanks was extended for his engaging and practical talk. A lively plant and card sale followed. Looking ahead, the club’s next meeting will be on Thursday 10th August with Richard Marshall, custodian of the National Collection of Penstemons. Plants will be available for purchase. Entry is £3 for members, £6 for non-members. Doors open at 6:50 p.m. for a 7:30 p.m. start — all are welcome! 4.
