3. CLUBS & SOCIETIESGARDENING CLUB NEWS www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore In June we welcomed celebrated horticulturalist and broadcaster Pippa Greenwood for a truly joyous and memorable event. Sharing stories from “her life in gardening,” Pippa took the audience on a journey through her early interest in plants, her education, and her influential work at RHS Wisley, where she led the plant pest and disease pathology department. She later moved into gardening media, writing for Amateur Gardening and Gardeners’ World, and has now been a BBC Radio 4 Gardeners’ Question Time panellist for an incredible 31 years. Pippa delighted the audience with anecdotes about gardening legends such as Alan Titchmarsh, Geoff Hamilton, and Geoffrey Smith, before reading her humorous and well-received poem, A Gardener’s Delight, which cleverly summed up her career in plant pathology. She then answered a range of audience gardening queries—covering topics from dahlia wilt to aphid-infested buddleias and camellias with leaf drop—offering her expertise with warmth and humour. Following a few club notices from Chairman Tom, Pippa drew the 12-prize raffle and received enthusiastic applause and thanks, before signing copies of her RHS book. The meeting was well attended and warmly appreciated, and anticipation is already building for next year’s programme - set to feature not one, but two nationally known gardening figures to be announced at the Christmas meeting. Next month we meet on the 10th of July, when Dr Keith Ferguson who worked at Kew Gardens for 29 years and will deliver a talk "Garden plants of South America" Members £3, non-members £6.
