OAK HILL Cof E SCHOOL https://www.oakhill.gloucs.sch.uk/ / [email protected] Alison Sharkey & Robyn Ball What a fantastic way to end the term! Our church service on Wednesday afternoon was a wonderful celebration of the children's work and their understanding of why we celebrate Easter. The children sang and spoke with confidence, which is always so lovely to see. Thursday afternoon was another egg-cellent afternoon! The whole school community came together, in the sunshine, to raise money towards Project Kitchen! Our year 5 and 6 children did a fantastic job running the games. Mrs Partington and Miss Watkins were super face painters and the hall was bustling with excitement over the tombola and the raffle! One of our Year 2 children did a fantastic job finding new homes for their lovely plushies and raised an incredible £58 for school - well done! As a school we have raised a fantastic £760. This money brings us one step closer to having the 'kitchen' area in school updated and new equipment to support our D.T lessons, Thrive sessions and breakfast and After School Club. The recent farm visit for Reception and Year 1 was a roaring (or bleating and mooing) success – the children got to feed lambs and calves as well as making butter. We then enjoyed some milk and shortbread! This event was kindly offered by Oat Hill farm and our wonderful volunteers made it possible – we are always on the lookout for school volunteers so please get in touch if you can offer time or skills or both to enrich our community. There are still many more exciting events to come this summer including another farm visit for Years 2, 3 and 4, a swimming gala, Y6 Leaver celebrations, more sporting events and our own sports day. ALDERTON ACORNS www.aldertonacorns.org.uk.co.uk Can You Help Keep Alderton Acorns Thriving? Alderton Acorns Preschool is a much-loved part of our village, providing a warm, nurturing environment where local children can learn and grow. As a charity-run Preschool, we rely on a dedicated volunteer committee to help with fundraising and decision-making—and now, we need your support! This August, two of our valued committee members are stepping down, and we urgently need to fill their places. Without a full committee, our Constitution prevents us from running the Preschool. Could you spare three to four hours a month? Our monthly meetings take just a couple of hours, but being part of the team does mean getting involved beyond the meetings. Whether it’s helping to plan fundraising events or supporting small tasks in between, we all play a part in making sure the Preschool thrives. The time commitment varies depending on what’s happening, but we work together to share the load and the rewards of seeing the Preschool flourish make it all worthwhile! The key leadership roles (Chair, Treasurer, and Secretary) are already covered, so we’re looking for two friendly, enthusiastic people to join our team. No special skills are needed. Being part of the committee is a great way to meet people, make a real difference in the community, and support our fantastic Preschool team, led by our wonderful new manager, Katie Chandler. Whether you have experience in events, a passion for community projects, or just want to lend a hand, we’d love to welcome your energy and ideas. If you’re curious or want to know more, please get in touch with myself, Katie or any of the *committee members via email or WhatsApp. We’d love to hear from you! Let’s work together to keep Alderton Acorns growing for the next generation. Thank you! Ali Armishaw Chair ([email protected]) *Andy & Grace Robertson, Cathie and Andy Bridges, Gaynor Kingston ST MARGARET’S CHURCH VE DAY 80TH CELEBRATION AFTERNOON TEA, MONDAY 5TH MAY, VILLAGE HALL Victory in Europe (VE) Day 2025 will mark the 80th anniversary of the end of the Second World War. Therefore, on Monday 5th May we will be holding an afternoon tea for £5 per person to include sandwiches, cakes and tea in Alderton Village Hall between 3pm and 5pm. Come and join us to celebrate our Second World War veterans, to both remember their efforts and to honour the freedom that VE Day represents. It will be great to see you. All proceeds will be shared between The Royal Air Force Benevolent Fund and St Margaret’s Church for a new heating system. As it's helpful to know if you are able to come for catering purposes, contact Gill Cogzell - [email protected] or Helen West - [email protected] but it is fine to turn up on the day. OUR THANKS Thank you to everyone who came along at the beginning of April to help tidy up the churchyard. We really appreciated your help. And thank you to all the people who created flower arrangements for Easter - the Church once again looked beautiful. 3. CLUBS & SOCIETIESGARDENING CLUB NEWS www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore The Alderton Gardening Club’s April meeting featured a talk by natural health practitioner Pauline Wickens for a talk on "The Bach flower remedies". An appreciative audience was given a history and background to a form of alternative therapy developed by Dr. Edward Bach, a British physician and homeopath, in the 1930s. The remedies are made from flower essences and are used to help balance emotional states. There are a range of individual flower essences, each one corresponding to a specific emotional state. There's also a popular combination called Rescue Remedy, designed for stress and emergencies. Pauline explained how these can be used in the garden. NEXT MEETING ON THURSDAY 8TH MAY, VILLAGE HALL Bedding plants for your garden - David Usher Doors open at 7pm. for a 7:30pm start, welcoming both members and visitors. £3 for members; £6 non-members including free refreshments. 4. EVENTSALDERTON PICNIC & STREET PARTY, SAT 5TH JULY, FREE In the absence of any major royal events this year we thought we’d have a street party anyway! You’ll be able to buy cakes, ice cream, and drinks from the bar. You bring yourselves, your friends and family, and a picnic. You’ll be sat on long tables down Church Road to share with old friends and new. There's no charge and everyone from the village, wherever you live, and however long you’ve lived here, is welcome. Yes, it’s that time of year again, when we make our annual plea to all the dog owners in the area to please keep your dogs on a lead when walking through (or near) fields where there are ewes and lambs. Sadly, we have already had one incident of an out of control dog, with no owner in sight. On this occasion the dog was contained in one of the arable fields, so luckily did not get in with the sheep. However well you think you know your dog and believe it to be perfectly behaved, most of them love a good game, so if they see sheep running, they want to join in. Fun for the dog, terror for the ewes and lambs! As we say every year, we appreciate it is a small minority of irresponsible dog owners. Many thanks for your co-operation, Gareth and Mel Watkins, Frampton Farm Send contributions to the Alderton Newsletter to [email protected] by the 25th of each month for inclusion in the following newsletter.
