Alderton Village Newsletter - November 2024Note from Editor: Well, the clocks have gone back and despite it being an unseasonably pleasant weekend weatherwise, it’s now dark at 5pm. It’s half term and Halloween week so just use the Alderton Code….Pumpkin and lights (or similar) outside = treats at the door. As our population has grown massively in the last few years hopefully the streets will be full of children in fancy dress having a great time. Torches and reflective clothes for safety please. Bonfire night will bring fire and explosions, so check for nesting hedgehogs before lighting up and PLEASE tell neighbours if you are having fireworks. GARDENING CLUB NEWS www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore For our October meeting of The Alderton Gardening Club we welcomed the delightful Duncan Coombs, much loved and respected lecturer in decorative horticulture at Pershore College. Duncan's lecturing skills and talents have helped countless numbers of people into successful careers in horticulture. He is also a complete plantoholic and still travels the world on gardening tours and trips, including this year to China! Chairman Tom opened the meeting with his usual welcome, three gardening jobs for the month and the usual introduction and build up for the speaker. Duncan's talk was all about plants, shrubs and trees for autumn colour. From Michaelmas daisies to corms and bulbs, from more exotic toad lilies to a seed case from a magnolia, from superb Japanese acers to rose hips there was something for everyone. Duncan is a naturally gifted, amusing and engaging speaker and the audience lapped up his every word. Halfway through he switched off the projector and did an impromptu gardener's question time! The talk was superbly illustrated with Duncan's own photographs, and helpfully each one had a plant name attached. Although autumn is regarded by some as an aftermath from the riot of colour summer serves up, Duncan illustrated that this time of the year can be just as colourful. Our members will have left the meeting with plenty of ideas for this season. After speaking for 70 minutes Duncan took a break following a loud round of applause from our audience, numbering upwards of 60. Tom then read out several club notices including plans for our Christmas party and its gardening quiz night. The twleve prize raffle organised by Beverly Lewis was drawn by our guest, who made history by becoming the first speaker to buy a strip of tickets and to win a prize!! Much to the amusement of the audience. Duncan Coombs is one of life's good guys, an inspirational speaker, lecturer and human being. It was great to have him back at our club and we will be re-booking him for the 2026 programme. Next meeting: Ann Chambers, head gardener from Kiftsgate garden. Thursday November 14th All welcome 7pm for 730pm start. £3 members, £6 non-members ALDERTON ACORNS www.aldertonacorns.org.uk VOLUNTEERS NEEDED TO HELP RUN THE ALDERTON ACORNS TODDLERS GROUP! Back in August, we said a fond farewell to our oldest Toddler Group members, celebrating their last day with cake and some heartfelt goodbyes. We also thanked our wonderful volunteer team members—Ros, Nicki, Cat, and Joy—for their dedication and hard work as they stepped down due to other commitments and their children moving on to ‘big school.’
The Toddler Group, held every Friday from 10 to 11:30 am (term time only) at the Village Hall, is a treasured community resource—a safe, fun, and friendly space where families can socialise and make new friends.
