CLUBS & SOCIETIESGARDENING CLUB NEWS https://www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore For our August meeting we welcomed plant expert and enthusiast Richard Marshall, who has a lifelong interest in horticulture. Richard volunteers at Hidcote Manor Gardens as their resident taxonomist (plant identifier) and is a custodian of the national collections of Penstemons – the focus of his talk. Through an illustrated presentation, Richard explained that Penstemons originate from western America and Mexico, with around 200 species and 275 cultivars. Locally, renowned grower Ron Sidwell of Ashton-under-Hill was instrumental in their development, and Pershore College has also propagated many cultivars. Richard advised that Penstemons thrive in a sunny position with free-draining soil and dislike being waterlogged. Old foliage should be left over winter to protect new growth, with pruning carried out in spring. Regular deadheading encourages continuous flowers, and cuttings taken in late summer root easily. He also highlighted pests and diseases to watch for and suggested bulbs and other plants that complement Penstemons beautifully. Over 50 members attended – a strong turnout for the holiday month. Two new members were welcomed, taking our total to a record-equalling 105. Chairman Tom shared gardening jobs for the month and announced upcoming events, including the Plant Sale and Coffee Morning on Saturday 20th September at the Village Hall, with three nurseries confirmed. The £10 garden token went to Jackie Watkinson of Gretton Fields for her lovely garden photos. A raffle of seven prizes followed, and Richard received warm thanks and applause for such an informative talk. Looking ahead, on Thursday 11th September we welcome celebrated plant hunter and nursery owner Derry Watkins, who will speak on “Plants for Late Summer Colour”. Some nursery stock will be for sale on the evening. Doors open 6.45 p.m. for a 7.30 p.m. start. Members £3, Non-Members £6 – all welcome!
