Alderton Playing Field improvement 2018
Great news - as of June 2018 Alderton’s new playground is now fully open. It’s got lovely shiny new climbing towers with steps, a mini climbing net, fireman’s pole and a bridge. With a new double width slide, roundabout, two spinners and new soft, safe surfacing under all the equipment it’s just in time for the school holidays!
Funding has come available for the construction of a pavilion and for improvements to the playground.
Pavilion funding comes from the following:
Playground funding comes from:
Money from any of these sources is specifically allocated to either the pavilion OR the Playground and cannot be used for both or assigned to one or the other project. As a consequence, the pavilion and playground projects will need to be run as separate but complementary projects.
Similarly the money must be used within a specific timescale or it will be lost. Planning permission for the pavilion has been granted and the design is focused on being a community resource to include changing rooms, toilets, kitchen facilities and storage area. It will be based in the south east Corner of the field and it is hoped construction will commence mid-late 2016.
Following a survey in 2014 it was made clear that there is support for changes to the playground. Section 106 money becomes available in 2016 and 2017 so it is likely that we will take a 2 phased approach. Discussions on how this project is to progress are on-going and there will be more news soon.
Pavilion funding comes from the following:
- £35,000 grant from Tewkesbury Borough Council, other grants and
- £29,350 Section 106 money from by Charles Church
- £22,829 Section 106 money from Cala Homes
Playground funding comes from:
- £10,000 Section 106 money from Charles Church
- £20,000 Section 106 money from Cala Homes
- £2,200 community fundraising

Section 106 funding
Section 106 (S106) funding is provided by developers to mitigate for a particular impact that would arise from a development. Section 106 agreements are known as Planning Obligations and are negotiated between Tewkesbury Borough Council Planning Authority and the developer. Planning obligations are legally enforceable agreements.
In Alderton we currently have the following Section 106 agreements from the following developers.
Charles Church:
Section 106 money was provided for by the Planning Inspector in her decision to allow the Charles Church development on Beckford Road:
"Agreement between the Council and the appellant contains a number of other planning obligations. Financial contributions of £10,000 towards improvements to the play area, £9,740 for improvements to the sports pitch and £29,250 for the provision of changing facilities have been secured. This is on the basis that the existing facilities are inadequate to cope with the additional use likely to be made of them by occupiers of the new dwellings."

Alderton Playground
Alderton's Playground is a few years old now and is looking a little tired. The Alderton Playground Improvement Project has been formed to see whether Alderton residents want to improve the playground and if so to make applications for National Lottery and other funding to improve it.
The Alderton Playground Improvement Project is supported by the Alderton Parish Neighbourhood Development Plan Group, led by the Parish Council. This Group is looking ahead to the evolution of the Parish over the next 20 years. The Alderton Playground Improvement Project is one of many areas the Group will be considering and seeking your views about in the coming months.
The land the playground occupies is owned by the Parish Council and is therefore protected from housing development. However, everyone locally must be aware of the planning applications currently affecting Alderton, and there are likely to be others. Alderton may grow meaning greater demand for facilities such as the playground. It is intended that any improvements to the playground will be funded by grants from the National Lottery and other bodies. The amount we need to raise will depend on the final plans, which will be informed by what you tell us. Local fundraising may also be required and the Parish Council will be responsible for ensuring the ongoing maintenance and insurance for the Playground. We will also consider the possibility of contributions from developers towards leisure, health and wellbeing. |
