Alderton Village Newsletter - June 2024Note from Editor: Well, May was a washout…with some people, sadly, getting water in their houses. The amazing Alderton spirit kicked in and there were, as always, volunteers galore. The stream at the back of my house became clogged up, so I, and others will be ensuring it is clear as more rain is forecast over the summer. We have tragically lost two young men in the last few months, both of whom have grown up in the village. It has thrown a lot of sadness across the whole neighbourhood, but also shown how amazing our community is at supporting each other. There is now a bench on our hill dedicated to Ross Thomas, and there are plans afoot for there to be another one for Will. It is a fabulous spot, one where many of us survey the view and think how lucky we are to live here. We now know that they will be holding an exhibition in the Village Hall, issuing a written letter and establishing a website. We will publicise the date of the public exhibition as soon as we know it. Archaeological digging has started and we understand an invitation is being extended to Oak Hill school for children to see any interesting items found. PROPOSED NEW DEVELOPMENT - Land South of Dibden Lane [ 26 affordable houses] There have been no further developments. ALDERTON PARISH COUNCIL ANNUAL MEETING This was held on Tuesday 7 May 2024 in the Village Hall. Over 40 people attended and local clubs and societies publicised their activities. DEVELOPMENT OF NEW STRAGEIC PLAN Development of new Strategic Plan for Cheltenham Borough Council, Gloucester City Council and Tewkesbury Borough Council. No further news. PLAYGROUND A potential supplier has been identified to erect the fencing around the children’s play area. Separately there has been a complaint about dog fouling in the play area. Residents are reminded not to take dogs into this area. FLOODING Reoccurring problems have been identified to our County Councillor and Gloucester Highways. We are awaiting a response. [ Made more important by the flooding on 22 May. This was at least attended by Gloucester Highways. ALLOTMENTS The Council were unsuccessful in their application for a grant to restore the old village shop, located on the allotments, for community use. An application will now be made to a different organisation. ROAD CLOSURES Willow Bank Road [for bridge strengthening]. These are scheduled for June/July 24. We are trying to be clearer about dates. GARDENING CLUB NEWS www.aldertonvillage.co.uk/alderton-gardening-club Phil Kitson/Tom Cullimore For our May meeting, we welcomed professional gardener and podcaster from Cirencester, Joff Elphick. Joff gave us a wide-ranging presentation. "Crayfish on the Lawn” was the title and it didn't disappoint. Our speaker has worked at some notable gardens and for some interesting people including Raymond Blanc, Sir Chris and Lady Evans, the National Trust, and currently poet Pam Ayres. Joff played us a recording of her reading her poem about Hedgehogs. He also featured Judith Haan who appeared on Tomorrow's World for longer than any presenter. The talk featured places where he has worked, unusual plants, moths, fungi, dragonflies, beetles and even snails. Joff told us how he had discovered a rare snail from Turkey which he noticed in a garden whilst at work, which had travelled here on imported plants. He concluded with a story about the crayfish and how he found it on the lawn! After speaking for 70 minutes Joff took a couple of questions, and then Chairman Tom gave out the latest club and village notices, followed by a brief talk on Wisteria. A seven prize raffle was drawn, and a vote of thanks was proposed by Tom. Free Tomato and Sunflower plants were on offer, thanks to Louise Kennedy for helping the chairman out with the supply of these. With 4 of the committee absent we were down to the bare bones staffing wise. We need not have worried though as Jono Lewis, Leonora Tovey, and Mike Patterson all put their shoulders to the wheel, thank you all! NEXT MEETING: Thursday 13th of June. Christine Walkden SOLD OUT £3 members, £6 non-members Currently all tickets have been sold for this event. Email [email protected] to see if there are any returns. Can we request that all ticket holders arrive a little earlier than usual to avoid queue congestion around the main entrance. Email [email protected] to see if any are still available. ST MARGARET’S CHURCH BISHOP OF TEWKESBURY The Bishop of Tewkesbury came to our service in Alderton on May 26th and it was great to welcome him to our Church. It was good to see the service so well attended. FLOWER FESTIVAL, SUMMER FAIR AND GIFT DAY This will be on Saturday July 27th with a flower display in the Church and stalls and refreshments in the Churchyard and Village Hall – all day. Gift Day is an event normally held on the Saint’s Day for the Church and ours for St Margaret’s is around this time. It is a way of supporting the Church financially because like any building, money is needed to keep it in good condition. We have to have an extensive building survey every 5 years which we have just had and inevitably with a very old building there are repairs that need to be done. The money that you kindly donate will be used for general church maintenance including essential bell tower repairs - many people in the village comment on how they enjoy hearing the bells. If you would like to make a cake for the refreshment stall, it would be gratefully received! VILLAGE STORE & POST OFFICE If you can, please use the village shop. At this time of year there are usually local strawberries, asparagus and tomatoes. THE GARDENERS ARMS www.gardenersarms.biz We are taking bookings for Father’s Day on Sunday 16th June 2024!
