Alderton Village Newsletter - December 2024Note from Editor: As we approach the festive period I am very aware of the people we have lost this year in the village both young and old. I hope nearly everyone has sat on the benches at the foot of the dungeon that commemorate both Ross and William, and taken in the view of our amazing village. Malcolm and Geoffrey were true lifelong villagers who gave their all for our community. For their families, and those of John and other villagers who are not here this Christmas, our thoughts are with you. REMEMBRANCE SUNDAY Parishioners gathered in numbers at the Alderton War Memorial to pay their respects and remember all those who have served and sacrificed themselves to defend our freedoms and protect our way of life, including the laying of wreaths and observing two minutes silence. CYBER ATTACK The cyber attack affecting Tewkesbury Borough Council website, including the Planning site, has now been resolved and the Council is working through the backlog including updates to planning applications. BOROUGH COUNCIL NAME CHANGE Following consultation, from January 2025 Tewkesbury borough council will be known as North Gloucestershire Borough Council, with phased and progressive roll out of the re-branding (https://tewkesbury.gov.uk/new-name/) Alderton Village Newsletter - November 2024Note from Editor: Well, the clocks have gone back and despite it being an unseasonably pleasant weekend weatherwise, it’s now dark at 5pm. It’s half term and Halloween week so just use the Alderton Code….Pumpkin and lights (or similar) outside = treats at the door. As our population has grown massively in the last few years hopefully the streets will be full of children in fancy dress having a great time. Torches and reflective clothes for safety please. Bonfire night will bring fire and explosions, so check for nesting hedgehogs before lighting up and PLEASE tell neighbours if you are having fireworks. Sadly some houses on School Road and Blacksmiths Road had water come in on Thursday night. Thanks go to the team of stalwarts who cleared drains, offered pumps, brought buckets, sandbags and worked til the early hours ensuring everyone was safe. This is the wonderful community spirit of Alderton in action. Talking of community spirit…..it’s going to be Halloween at the end of the month. This is always a big event in Alderton and goes really smoothly. Our children have grown up knowing that a pumpkin display in windows/by a front door means the person inside is happy to be ‘Trick or Treated’. Don’t make your gangs too big, younger children need to be accompanied by adults and please wear reflective items and have torches. It is lovely seeing and hearing the children around the village out and enjoying themselves. Kids do be considerate though, some older people can feel very intimidated even if you don’t mean to.
